Fund protection

What happens to your balance if the company fails.

Key takeaways

  • Three ratings: not protected, medium, high.
  • The casino rates itself and must tell you.
  • 'Not protected' still means funds are kept separate.
  • Do not leave large balances idle.

In shortEvery UK casino that holds customer money must state one of three ratings: not protected (funds kept separate, but not safe in insolvency), medium protection or high protection.

The three ratings

RatingWhat it means
Not protected: segregationCustomer funds are held apart from company funds but would form part of the business's assets if it became insolvent. The minimum for online operators.
Medium protectionFunds are held apart and arrangements, such as insurance, exist to return them to customers on insolvency.
High protectionFunds are held in a formal trust account, independently verified and controlled.

As set out by the Gambling Commission, checked 8 October 2026. The lowest rating was called "basic" until it was renamed.

Finding a casino's rating

  1. Open the casino's terms and conditions.
  2. Search for 'protection of customer funds' or 'insolvency'.
  3. Read the rating and the explanation beside it.
  4. You are also shown it when you first deposit.

A self-assessment

The operator applies the rating to itself; the Commission does not approve it. Operators with a "not protected" rating must remind customers every six months that their funds are not protected.

Our five

We have not read each casino's stated rating, so we label this check "not checked". Look it up before you deposit.

Two details worth knowing

Money staked on bets that have not yet settled is not counted as customer funds, so it sits outside whatever protection the operator has. And even medium protection is not an absolute guarantee: the regulator says so in its own guidance.

A five-minute routine before you deposit

Confirm the operator on the public register. In the terms, find the customer funds rating and the dispute resolution service. Read the welcome offer's wagering, deadline and payment exclusions, or decide to decline it. Set a deposit limit. Verify your identity. Five minutes, once per casino, removes most of the ways an account goes wrong.

Two things to check for yourself

We have not confirmed two items for any of the five casinos, and both are in the casino's own terms. The first is the customer funds rating: search the terms for 'insolvency' and you will find 'not protected', 'medium protection' or 'high protection'. The second is the dispute resolution service: search for 'dispute' or 'ADR' to find the independent body that hears complaints the casino has not resolved. Both take about a minute.

Choosing between licensed casinos

Once the licence is confirmed, choose on what you will actually use. For slots, look at the size of the library and the return-to-player settings. For tables, look at the live studios and the rules on each table. For offers, read the wagering, the deadline and the payment exclusions. For payments, check that your method is listed and how quickly verified customers are reported to be paid. Then make a small deposit and a small withdrawal before committing more.

Licences were confirmed on the Gambling Commission register; regulatory actions were checked against Commission announcements on 8 October 2026; offer terms on 5 October 2026. Items labelled "reported" come from independent reviews, and items labelled "not checked" we have not confirmed. How we check. 18+. Free help: 0808 8020 133 or safer gambling.
